September 13, 2021 Walker Creek Fire Daily Update
Walker Creek Fire Wildfire
News – 2 days ago
Tonasket, WA:

Yesterday, crews pushed in the fire line from the USFS 3230 road to Antoine Creek, along the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain. Fire behavior in this area continues to be minimal, which is allowing crews to engage in direct line on the fire, where safe to do so. Fallers have been working on removing fire weakened trees along roads and behind the cabins on the west side of Bonaparte Lake.

Today, crews will continue to scout out areas for indirect line towards the USFS 300 road, on the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain. Repairs crews will be utilizing excavators and dozers, as well as hand crews, to work on suppression dozer and hand lines where they can impact water resources or on steep slopes.

Road closures are in effect for the fire area and law enforcement will be patrolling the closed roads. Water tenders and road graders will be maintaining access roads throughout the fire area as well as fallers evaluating and removing fire weakened trees. For public and fire fighter safety, please help keep everyone safe and stay out of the fire area.

The weather is expected to be dry and mostly clear for Monday and Tuesday with near normal temperatures. With a higher relative humidity, moderating temperatures and shrinking burn window, fire behavior is continued to be minimal throughout the week.

Evacuation levels have been reduced to level 1 throughout the area.

September 10, 2021 Walker Creek Daily Fire Update
Walker Creek Fire Wildfire
News – 2 days ago
Moderating temperatures, along with heavy cloud cover reduced fire behavior along the northwest side of the fire yesterday. The fire grew about 217 acres. The fire has been predominately backing in heavy fuels, with single torching being observed.

Heavy fuels, steep terrain and rocky cliffs create a severe hazard for wildland firefighters to create direct line on the fire. Crews have been prepping the USFS 125 and 130 roads as indirect fire line. Further evaluation is being considered on creating indirect line between the northern and southern flanks of the fire. Aerial support is assigned to the fire and will be available to slow progress of the fire as backs down to the fire line, if needed.

Fire behavior increased into the night as a thermal belt established at around the 5,000 foot line. An infrared flight has been flown last night to determine the additional growth.

Crews will be evaluating potential burn out operations from this morning into the early afternoon, prior to the expected rainfall. If this occurs, expect increasing visible smoke along the northwest flank of Bonaparte Mountain.

Today, there is expected to be increasing clouds, cooling temperatures and higher relative humidity with a chance of precipitation. This combination typically reduces overall fire behavior. Smoke will still be readily visible along the northwest flanks of Bonaparte Mountain. Fuels will continue to burn and produce minor smoke in the remaining areas of the fire.

Road closures and evacuations remain in place.

NORTHWEST INCIDENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 12
Incident Commanders: Jeff Dimke and Bobby Shindelar
The Chickadee Creek Fire is located 15 miles west of Tonasket, Washington and the Walker Creek Fire is 13 miles east/northeast of Tonasket, Washington, surrounding Lake Bonaparte. The Incident Command Post at the Omak Stampede Grounds is closed to all but essential personnel.
The holiday weekend has brought more people into the area, so be aware of increased traffic and of fire restrictions in areas you visit. The forests are still very dry, and fires can easily start. Due to heightened fire danger, please be especially careful recreating on public lands.
Operations
Firefighters continue mop-up operations daily and are removing hoses and pumps from areas where they are no longer necessary. Suppression repair actions are being inventoried and will be addressed by the land management agencies. Resources needed for the national firefighting effort are being released and made available for these assignments.
Chickadee Creek FireFirefighters continue to secure the fire within its existing footprint. Patrol and mop-up work is ongoing around the fire to identify and extinguish any remaining heat sources near the line and add depth to containment lines.
Walker Creek Fire
Smoke from inside containment lines will continue to be visible in the days ahead as the northwestern portion of the fire smolders and slowly burns. A heavy helicopter used water bucket drops to moderate fire behavior along the western fire perimeter yesterday. An indirect line is in place as a contingency, should fire behavior escalate and pose a risk of loss of containment. The remainder of the fire remains in mop-up and patrol status.

WALKER CREEK AND CHICKADEE CREEK FIRES: Northwest Team 12 will host a virtual Community Meeting Wednesday, September 1 at 11:00. Navigate to the Central Washington Fire Information page (URL: https://www.facebook.com/cwafireinfo) to tune in.

DAILY FIRE UPDATE - AUGUST 31, 2021:
The Chickadee Creek Fire is located approximately 15 miles west of Tonasket, Washington. The Walker Creek Fire is located approximately 13 miles east/northeast of Tonasket, Washington. The Incident Command Post at the Omak Stampede Grounds is closed to all but essential personnel.

Operations
Firefighters will be on the look-out today for any spot fires resulting from last night’s wind. Resources continue to de-mobilize as they complete their 14-day assignments and head home to rest before reassignment. Replacement crews and equipment are limited, so resources continue to be shared between the Walker Creek and Chickadee Fires, depending on where they are most needed.

Chickadee Creek Fire
Fire crews are using hose lays to deliver water to the fire line for mop-up along the northern fire perimeter. Firefighters continue to build direct line where possible, tightening up control lines to minimize acres burned on the fire. Fire crews burned out areas of unburned fuels on the southwestern portion of the fire yesterday and will continue to burn small blocks to secure control lines as opportunities allow.

Walker Creek Fire
Our fixed wing airplane located a spot fire between the direct and indirect fire control lines yesterday and helicopters dropped water to minimize fire behavior while ground crews secured the spot. Crews will continue to search for and extinguish any remaining hot spots and smoking fuels that could threaten the fire line.

The Chickadee Creek Fire is located approximately 15 miles west of Tonasket, Washington. The Walker Creek Fire is located approximately 13 miles east/northeast of Tonasket, Washington, surrounding Lake Bonaparte. The Incident Command Post at the Omak Stampede Grounds is closed to all but essential personnel to help ensure the health and safety of community members and firefighters. Today is expected to be the warmest and driest day of the week, with temperatures in the low-to-mid 80s.
Operations:
Cooler weather over the last few days has enabled firefighters to make good progress building and securing fire line, and as a result containment on both fires increased significantly today. Higher temperatures and lower humidity today may cause an uptick in fire behavior, so crews will be alert.
Chickadee Creek Fire
Helicopter water bucket drops were utilized on the northeast portion of the fire to slow fire spread near direct control lines. Fire crews continued to construct direct lines where possible and worked to complete indirect lines along the southern and western flanks of the fire yesterday. Firefighters are continuing to burn remaining pockets of fuels on the eastern portion of the fire to secure that perimeter. Work is ongoing building hose lays around the fire perimeter to enable water delivery to the fire edge for mop-up.
Walker Creek Fire
Firefighters are working to complete indirect line in the northeastern portion of the fire due to rugged terrain and limited access that precludes direct line construction. Fire crews are mopping up along Forest Road 33 on the northern fire perimeter and are continuing mop-up and patrol around structures south of Bonaparte Lake. Firefighters are continuing indirect line construction toward Lost Lake Road on the northwestern portion of the fire. Yesterday, firefighters secured a spot fire on the southern fire perimeter created by a tree torching near the containment lines.

Operations:
Fire crews and equipment are being shifted around both fires internally as assignments are completed to allow the most efficient use of resources.
Chickadee Creek Fire:
Fire crews are continuing mop-up on the western fire perimeter. Firefighters completed additional dozer line on the northern fire edge yesterday and prepared areas for burnout operations to secure containment lines. Fire crews built direct dozer line up against the fire’s edge on the southern portion of the fire, working to keep the fire in the smallest possible footprint. Helicopter water bucket drops cooled hot spots on the eastern edge of the fire. A burnout operation is planned today above the road on the eastern fire edge, to remove pockets of unburned fuels and secure the fire line.
Walker Creek Fire:
Firefighters completed a section of indirect line along the northwestern fire perimeter. Fire crews are mopping up the northeastern fire edge and are building direct fire line along the eastern fire perimeter to minimize the fire size. Firefighters continued mop-up work along the southern fire perimeter and patrolled to locate and extinguish remaining heat sources near the fire line yesterday. - The northern side of the main fire is in steep terrain causing firefighters to go indirect along Cecile Road. Burnout operations will likely occur later this week to reduce the rate of spread in this steep terrain.
- Along Douglas Mountain Road and Sarsapkin Circle Road, indirect lines will be secured as contingency lines.
Walker Creek Fire
Location: 13 miles E/NE of Tonasket, WA, surrounding Lake Bonaparte
Fire Size Today: 23,404 Acres
Containment: 9%
Fire Start Date: August 3, 2021
Cause: Under investigation
Resources: 661 personnel: 10 crews, 41 engines,
46 heavy equipment, 3 Type 1 Helicopters, 1 Type 2 Helicopter, 1 Type 3 Helicopter, Air Attack
Operational Plan for Today:
- Within the “bowl” area around Bonaparte Lake, engines, hand crews, and heavy equipment will mop-up hot spots, debris, and secure fire line around structures.
- The Big River Hotshots are finalizing direct line in the Lost Lake area.
- Around the Fourth of July Ridge, steep terrain has forced firefighters to use indirect tactics creating large areas of unburned fuel between the line and the main fire. If conditions allow, burnout operations are an effective tactic to reduce the risk of the main fire gathering momentum during a run and jumping the containment line. Burnout operations may occur later this week.
Fire conditions and weather:
Today, weather will be mostly sunny in the morning and then clouds will roll in early afternoon with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will be in the mid-60s with winds out of the north ranging from 5-10 mph. When thunderstorms occur, winds may increase with gusts up to 35 mph. Winds will be upslope and terrain driven. Fire behavior will be moderate as many surface fuels still have moisture from recent rains.

Walker Creek Fire daily facts for August 21, 2021
Walker Creek Fire Wildfire
News – 19 min. ago
Location: 1.5 miles east of Lake Bonaparte

Fire Size: 23,184 acres

Containment: 3 percent

Fire Start Date: August 3, 2021

Cause: Under Investigation

Resources: 529 personnel, including 9 crews, 42 engines, 42 heavy equipment, 2 Type 1 helicopters, 1 Type 2 helicopter, Air Attack

Operational plan for today:

Crews will take advantage of the weather by putting in direct line with heavy equipment along the eastern and southeastern sides of the fire. Direct line is when firefighters work directly adjacent to the fire’s edge, removing unburned fuel to slow the growth of the fire.
Improve existing indirect dozer lines along the western part of the fire.
Structure protection crews will continue to monitor, patrol, and extinguish hot spots around structures.
Current Situation:

The Rocky Mountain Area Type 2 Incident Management Blue Team assumed command of the Chickadee Creek and Walker Creek fires this morning at 6am.
Fire conditions and weather:

The Chickadee Creek and Walker Creek fires received from one quarter to 4/10 inch of rain last night, which will reduce fire behavior today to creeping and smoldering.
Temperatures will range from the 60s to mid-70s depending on elevation. Winds will be light and variable with widespread wetting rain and thunderstorms possible throughout the entire day. When thunderstorms pass through the area, gusty winds of up to 25 mph may occur.

There is a flash flood watch for early Saturday morning the 21st to late Sunday the 22nd for both fire areas. A steady north wind will continue throughout the weekend. There is a 70% chance of afternoon rain on the Chickadee Fire today, and 78% for Walker Creek in the evening. This light moisture event will last over the weekend and through the beginning of the week. However, a drier and warmer trend will return in the middle of the week. Crews expect to make good work of this cool and wet period over the weekend.
Chickadee Creek: Firefighters battled spot fires yesterday and will continue those efforts today. Direct handline will be constructed to anchor south of Wickiup Creek to existing roadways. Feller bunchers continue prepping Sarsapian Road, connecting around problem areas and up around the northeast of fire, and securing roads to Cecile Creek.
Walker Creek: A heavy equipment division will be moving into the northwest sector of the fire to continue constructing an indirect box around that area. More direct line efforts will be focused around the 3230 road and other key areas. Efforts to cool off hotspots around structures is ongoing. Key areas for this are Walker Lake, Summer Road, Bonaparte Lake, and surrounding communities. Crews are strengthening lines with dozers and skidgens and burning off fuels in chunks to minimize spot fires.
Evacuations: Evacuations remain in place. Refer to the Okanogan County, WA county wide advisory map for updated changes.

Walker and Chickapee Daily Update 8.19.2021
Walker Creek Fire Wildfire
News – 1:37 hrs. ago
With the lower wind speeds and improved overnight relative humidity, crews were able to make progress on both fires. Acreage on the Chickadee Fire was recently updated after inclement weather prevented infrared aircraft flights for multiple days.

Walker Creek Fire: Firefighters were able to secure the 050 road to Bonaparte Lake Road, as well as tying into other existing roads, fortifying the northern edge of the fire. Activity by Squattersville kept firefighters and engines engaged yesterday. Crews were able to establish control line from Bonaparte Road to the 3230 Road. Aerial operations continued their bucket drops, making progress south of the 3230 road. Structure protection continues to be a top priority along with patrolling and scouting potential line improvements. On the north/northeast portion of the fire, crews will focus on prepping roads and putting in direct line. Cooling of hotspots around structures in that area is underway. Patrolling will also be done around Walker Lake and west of Summer Road.

Chickadee Creek Fire: Crews experienced spot fires east/northeast of control lines and concentrated on suppressing fire in that area. Firefighters continue to work down in the difficult Wickiup Creek area and southwest of the fire, securing lines. There was growth on Sarsapkin Road yesterday and hand crews, along with heavy equipment, prepped the roadway, attempting to box around that area and connect with Chickadee Creek Road.

Evacuations: Evacuations remain in place. Refer to the Okanogan County, WA county wide advisory map for updated changes.

A Community Open house for the Walker and Chickadee fires was held last evening at the History Park Community Pool. Fifty-four people attended the informative one and ½ hour session.
Walker Creek Fire: Cooler temperatures and higher humidity moderated the fire behavior experienced on Sunday. The fire still managed to increase by 2,552 acres on the southwest perimeter of the fire and west of Lost Lake. Once again aerial resources VLAT’s, retardant planes, Single Engine Air Tankers (SEAT’s) and heavy helicopters were used to assist firefighters and engine crews. The fire has not reached Beaver Canyon.
Today’s activities include fireline construction from the southwest perimeter down to Highway 20, hot spotting west of Lost Lake, constructing indirect line with the heavy equipment on the northwest perimeter, connecting the northeast perimeter of the fire into a rock quarry on the Toroda road and gridding for hotspots in the Bunch road area. Structure protection continues in the vicinity of the Bonaparte and Summer roads.
Chickadee Creek Fire: Fire acreage remains the same from yesterday because an infrared mapping flight was not performed last evening. Fire officials report that that the fire did increase in size but not substantially. Today’s activities include fireline preparation on the perimeter of the fire using existing roads, trails and natural features in anticipation of a future firing operation to remove the fuels between the main fire and firelines.
Evacuations: Evacuations remain in place for several communities. Please refer to the Okanogan County, WA county wide advisory map for updated changes.

A Community Open House for the Walker and Chickadee Fires will be today at 7 pm at the History Park Community Pool, 6 ½ N. Locust Way, Tonasket, WA.
Walker Creek Fire: The Red Flag Warning issued for Sunday August 14 produced gusty southwest winds and increased the fire size by 6,000 acres. Those increases were in the southwest and northeast perimeters of the fire. The fire has not reached Beaver Canyon. Around Lost Lake firefighters were successful in extinguishing multiple spot fires. Clearing skies allowed aerial resources which included VLATs (Very Large Air Tankers), three heavy lift helicopters and water scooping planes (Super Scoopers) to make multiple drops to assist firefighters. Crews installed sprinklers and hose lays along the Bonaparte and Summer roads for structure protection.
Today’s activities include continuing with structure protection, scouting a fireline location to bring the southwest edge of the fire to Highway 20, identifying roads, trails and natural features to construct fire line on the northeast perimeter of the fire and continued hot spotting.
Chickadee Creek Fire: Yesterday, gusty southwest winds pushed the fire northeast and increased the fire size by 800 acres. Today’s activities include scouting a fire line from the new fire area to roads, trails and natural features to limit fire spread. Firefighters will continue to mop up and patrol the south and west perimeters of the fire to ensure it is cold. Hot spotting outside existing containment lines will also continue.
Evacuations: Several communities have had their evacuation levels changed. Please refer to the Okanogan County, WA county wide advisory map for updated changes.
